Flower Market

Pop-up markets come into being just before Chinese New Year.  These are apparently about as prevelant as Christmas Tree vendors, but it’s a sanctioned activity here.

We saw bazillions of flowers.  Orchids, mums, forsythia, cherry, pussy willow, little orange trees with lots of oranges on them, and a variety of Bonsai trees ranging from about a foot tall to about 5 feet tall.

A group of guys were trying to move one of the big ones and load it into a truck.  Some dialogues need no translation.

The flowers as a holiday decoration have several advantages.  They’re quick – plop ‘em out and you’re decorated – and they’re disposable. Nobody feels obliged to try to keep them alive for any period of time.  That also means there aren’t any decorations needing to go back in those little boxes at the end of the holiday season.

It’s a good sign to put fruit by your front door (outside) for the new year.  Primarily five kinds – bananas, pineapple, dragonfruit and 2 others I didn’t catch.

It’s interesting that most of the plants that grow in Saigon also grow in North Carolina
